5.11.11

Hip hip hooray, another blog giveaway!

Inspired by the run I took this afternoon--in extreme humidity and 86 degrees, which I wouldn't have any other way (it's my favorite temperature to run in!)--and the fact that I had this random revelation that Demi Moore may have had a good thought in getting a "knee lift" (that skin right above the knees is starting to crinkle at the right--or wrong--angle), the blog giveaway has to do with health.

So I made it about food!

We do, after all, eat to live. And we want long, healthy lives!

I'll be giving away THREE items:

1. A year's subscription (10 issues) of my favorite magazine, Vegetarian Times. I realize that all of my dear blog readers aren't vegetarians--but even if you converted a meal or two a week to all vegetables, you'd be doing amazing good for your body--and our planet! Check out their website here.

2. A copy of the cookbook, Moosewood Restaurant New Classics. It's this amazing--again all vegetarian--cookbook that is chock full of delicious pizzas, lasagnas, pastas, and even more than one way to make tofu taste good! Seriously!! The restaurant is actually in Ithaca, New York, but they were really kind of the trailblazer for making vegetarian cooking appealing to the general American population. They set the standard, and it's delicious. (I remember my dad had a Moosewood cookbook back in the early 90s. Their lasagna is famous!) You can check out their website here, and the cookbook here.

3. A $25 gift card to Whole Foods so you can jumpstart (or continue) your path to delicious living. Visit their website here

So how do you enter? Make sure you are a follower (just click that icon to the right), and then leave a comment on this post only about ways you think you could clean up your eating--for you, your kids, the planet, etc. I use a randomizing website to select the winners, so your responses are never judged. I just like hearing all of your ideas! Please don't submit regimented diets--this is just about making what we put into our bodies less processed (think fresh tomatoes and mozzarella instead of leftover Pizza Hut).

You have until 12:00 noon on Sunday, May 15th, to submit your responses!

Happy, healthy eating!

  1. wow- i LOVE giveaways! and i can't wait to hear everyone's ideas. our biggest challange with cleaning up our eating is the kid's snacks! I am working on making more homemade (already have a great graham cracker and granola bar recipe) but i really want to stop buying processed snacks entirely- even organic ones.

  2. We hit up our local Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings to stock up on fresh fruits and veggies for the week. We try to buy something new each week for our 1-year old to try. So far, he's pretty much loved everything...in fact, he turned down a very tasty bite of the chocolate brownie I offered him this evening for a green grape!

  4. I started running to the farmers market with a backpack to cut down on the use of my car for groceries. That way I know where the food is coming from and I make less of a impact on the environment.
I also started composting and hope to grown my own herb garden with the results. I swear I'm not a hippy though... My town pretty much shames me into doing this.

  5. Blogger's whackadoo happenings the last 24 hours deleted all the comments. Andrea, Natalie, Grant--I've got you entered, but if you wouldn't mind reposting so the rest of the general public can view your seriously great ideas, that would be awesome!

  6. I put in two raised vegetable beds this year. I wanted to start growing more of our own food. In the past it's only been tomatoes and onions. But this year it's 3 kinds of potatoes, onions, green beans, zucchini, broccoli, lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, AND of course, tomatoes. We also visit our local farmers market when we can. We get fruits, veggies, eggs, and yes, even local meat. Great way to support local farmers, your community and your body!

  7. I need to do a better job of planning ahead. Breakfast and lunch stay about the same but add in husband, child, dog walking and I'm ready to eat anything quick!

  8. We have a garden so this summer there will be plenty of fresh stawberries, tomatos, green beans and brussle sprouts (random, i know) to enjoy! We also go to our local farmers market on Saturday mornings. Try to pick out one new item each week to introcuce to our one year old.

  9. We started using Green BEAN delivery- inspired by your post, actually! We also purchased a new cookbook (this one: http://amzn.to/jkGuoJ)that encourages fresh eating and planted a few extra veggies in the garden. The idea is to do minimal grocery shopping, and base our meals around what comes out of the ground (and to our doorstep) this summer!

  10. After we moved from the farm we were living on for the past 2 summers where all veggies were free and free to pick to a place where we can't even dig up the backyard to plant veggies I was really worried, however while working at the bakery and hearing from tons of locals and usuals that come in how great the farmers market is in Lexington, my boyfriend and I can't wait to take his boys down there to pick out some really fresh and yummy veggies! Not only that but even though they don't realize it (yet) I do one night without meat and another night with out a carb loaded dinner! It's fun to see them really enjoy food that isnt surrounded by noodles or a hunk of meat. It is a chance for the boys to try something that isn't in their norm!!

  11. Mealtime is the most stressful part of the day for me with one very picky toddler who basically lives off of nothing. I bought "The Sneaky Chef" and "Deceptively Delicious," but I have not yet put them to the test. With my younger toddler, I am able to give her a Happy Tot or an Ella's Kitchen pouch to sneak in the extra goodness. I research a ton to try to find the healthiest options. I use the Fooducate app while at the grocery store to find the best selection. It allows you to scan in the barcode to see how the product scores and provides healthier alternatives. I buy organic fruits and always wash them well. Recently I discovered that in all my attempts to feed my children a well-rounded meal, I have neglected myself and my husband. We eat a lot of crap, and so now I am on a mission to change that. When I'm washing up fruit for the kids, I wash a little extra for the adults. Tonight we had an almost all vegetable meal. Hopefully we are on the path to being a healthier family all-around!
